Contact lenses: essential care and warning signs you shouldn't ignore

Everything you need to know about contact lens hygiene, daily routines and symptoms that require immediate professional review.

Contact lenses are a fantastic option for vision correction — but they sit directly on one of your most sensitive organs. Proper care isn't optional; it's essential for avoiding infections, irritation and long-term complications.

Here's what every contact lens wearer should know.

The non-negotiable hygiene routine

Before touching your lenses

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Dry with a lint-free towel — fibres from regular towels can transfer to the lens.
  3. Never handle lenses with wet or damp hands (water contains microorganisms).

Putting lenses in and taking them out

  1. Always start with the same eye to avoid mixing up left and right.
  2. Place the lens on your fingertip (not your nail) and check it's not inside-out.
  3. When removing, pinch gently — never pull or drag across the eye surface.

Lens case and solution care

  • Replace your lens case every 1–3 months, even if it looks clean.
  • Never top up old solution — empty, rinse and refill with fresh solution daily.
  • Never use tap water to rinse lenses or the case. Ever.
  • Store lenses fully submerged in fresh solution when not wearing them.

Warning signs: when to remove lenses immediately

Your eyes communicate when something is wrong. Remove your lenses and seek professional review if you experience:

  • Persistent redness that doesn't improve after removing the lens
  • Sharp pain or burning sensation
  • Blurred vision that doesn't clear after blinking
  • Unusual discharge or excessive tearing
  • Feeling of something stuck under the lens

If pain, redness or persistent blur appears, remove the lens immediately and request a professional review. Never "push through" eye discomfort with contact lenses — it's not worth the risk.

How long can I wear my lenses each day?

This depends on the lens type and your eyes, but general guidelines:

  • Daily disposables: up to 12–14 hours, then discard.
  • Monthly lenses: up to 10–12 hours daily, with strict cleaning routines.
  • Never sleep in lenses unless specifically prescribed for extended wear.
