When should you replace your lenses or frame? A practical guide
Clear indicators to help you decide whether it's time to update your lenses, your frame, or both.
Many people wear glasses well past their optimal lifespan without realising that their vision, comfort and even their posture could improve significantly with an update. But how do you know when it's actually time to change?
Here's a straightforward guide to help you make the right decision.
When to replace your lenses
Signs your lenses need updating
- Frequent visual fatigue at the end of the day, especially after screen use or reading.
- Glare and poor contrast, particularly noticeable when driving at night.
- Visible coating wear: peeling anti-reflective treatment, persistent smudges that won't clean off, or micro-scratches across the surface.
- Prescription change: if more than 18–24 months have passed since your last check, your prescription may have shifted.
How often should lenses be replaced?
- Standard lenses: every 2–3 years, or sooner if your prescription changes.
- Progressive lenses: whenever your near or intermediate prescription changes significantly.
- Coated lenses (anti-reflective, blue light filter): coatings degrade over time even with perfect care.
When to replace your frame
Signs your frame needs retiring
- The temples no longer grip properly and the glasses slide down constantly.
- Visible discolouration, cracking or material fatigue (especially on hinges).
- The frame has been adjusted multiple times and no longer holds its shape.
- You simply want a style refresh — and that's perfectly valid too!
A well-maintained quality frame can last 3–5 years or more. But if adjustments no longer hold, it's time to invest in a new one.
Can I keep my frame and just change the lenses?
Yes, absolutely — provided the frame structure is in good condition. We assess this at our workshop and let you know honestly whether it's viable or whether a new frame would serve you better.
What if my frame still fits perfectly?
You can often replace just the lenses, provided the frame structure is sound. We'll assess it and give you an honest recommendation.
